Tasting Notes
Intensely aromatic aromas hit the nose as soon as the bottle is opened. In the glass, the wine smells of honey bourbon and maple, with the fresh balance of orange peel and acacia. The palate is richly sweet and lusciously textured, perfect with dessert and a cigar.
Winemaking
Fresh grape juice fermented in neutral oak barrels and was fortified with brandy to halt fermentation and retain natural grape sugars. The wine then matured at warm temperatures to slowly cook, or "madeirize." Over the years since the base wine was made in 2013, new wine has been blended into the old.
Food Pairing
Pair with savory to sweet dishes: grilled and glazed meats, holiday fare, and sticky toffee pudding.
The Vineyard
Counties: Terry, Smith
Tended to by the modern pioneers of Texas vineyard management, Andy and Lauren Timmons planted Lost Draw Vineyard way back in 2005. Their 75 acres are devoted to grapes that can be grown sustainably in the semi-arid Texas High Plains AVA, as are the other vineyard sites they manage. Sustainability means farming that focuses on future grapevine health. Lloyd Vineyard in Tyler was dedicated to a grape that succeeds in far East Texas: Black Spanish (or Lenoir).
Elevation: 3,500 ft. Soil: Shallow Amarillo fine sandy loam over limestone base.
